A painter, essayist and poet, Etel Adnan was born in 1925 in Beirut, Lebanon. Aged 30, she discovered Paul Klee in California where she lived after studying in Paris. In the 1960s, she began teaching Philosophy of Art at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael, north of San Francisco, where she made her first artworks. This polyvalent artist, who writes poetry and essays on philosophy and produces works with expanses of intense colours as well as calligraphic drawings, has truly found a similar spirit in Paul Klee. Etel Adnan talks about Paul Klee as of a first love, a love at first sight. A passion that has sharpened her gaze.
